Black Magic

So after over a month wait, we finally receive our new camera. Now buying a camera isn’t an easy choice, especially when it’s your main tool in the trade, so there was lot of debate as to what camera to get. In the end we settled on getting a Black Magic Pocket Cinema Camera and delve into the world of cinema cameras. With 13f-stops of dynamic range and its ability to film in ProRes all in such a small form factor, completely trumped our old Canon 60D’s in almost every way. With our old cameras being quite bulky and obvious, the new BMPCC is a more inconspicuous meaning most people don’t even know you’re filming.

The picture quality is absolutely amazing and, as I mentioned before, the ProRes codec is an dream to edit with, without a single dropped frame during playback in Prem-pro. The only down side is the incredibly big file sizes, a 32gb SD card an hold around 20 minutes of ProRes footage, but this can be worked around by using an external recorder like an Atomos Ninja (hint hint, on the shopping list). But you will be surprised with how much content you can capture if you know to shoot conservatively and only capture what you need. So far we’ve used it during two of the Winchester Uni’s fresher’s events and we still have room for another 10 minutes of footage.

A wicked little addition to our filming arsenal of filming equipment, be sure to stick around and see what we can make this little camera do.
